  24.     Requirements
  25.     ------------

  27.         Any PC or compatible with Windows, a word processing
  28.     or page layout program and a spreadsheet program.  These
  29.     files are designed for use by those with a basic (not
  30.     advanced) knowledge of word processing and spreadsheets.
  31.     
  32.         The text files are in Word/Windows 2.0 and ASCII
  33.     (*.TXT) formats.  The spreadsheet files are in
  34.     Excel/Windows v4.0 (*.XLS).  Any later versions and also
  35.     many other competitive programs should be able to import
  36.     these files.
  37.     
  38.         I am partial to laser printers, but it is not a
  39.     requirement UNLESS you are planning to present this plan to
  40.     venture capitalists or other sophisticated investors.
  41.     
  42.         A Macintosh version is also available.  It is located on
  43.     CompuServe, Ziffnet, GEnie, Delphi, America OnLine, BMUG,
  44.     and BCS-Mac, as well as several shareware vendors.
  45.

  47.     Purpose:
  48.     
  49.         Every business needs to have a plan in order to track
  50.     its progress.  There is no business too small, too large,
  51.     too complex or too simple to avoid having a business plan.
  52.     I found that many businessmen assume that the usefulness
  53.     of their business plan is over once the business is
  54.     up and running.  I have been successful using a business
  55.     plan not only to start a business, but as an important
  56.     management tool in an ongoing business.
  57.     
  58.         This program is designed for use by any size (small,
  59.     medium or large) or type (product or service) of business.
  60.     It also includes all the necessary information which most
  61.     lenders or investors are seeking.
  62.     
  63.         I didn't write this program in an ivory tower some
  64.     place, but out of my own business experience.  For seven
  65.     years, I imported cuckoo clocks from the Black Forest of
  66.     Germany, so this is definetly a "cuckoo" program!  I have
  67.     been involved in many other business ventures.  I'd be lying
  68.     if I said I made money with all of them.  But I can
  69.     truthfully say that all were successful, mainly because I
  70.     followed a plan and stuck to it.

  72.         BUSINESS PLAN MASTER supplies you with complete template
  73.     files.  I give you professional formats (footnootes, tables
  74.     of contents,some simple graphics), some excellent sample
  75.     text and several spreadsheet files for you to use.  Alone
  76.     these could save you many hundreds of hours of work.
  77.     Because of the wide diversity of businesses and business
  78.     ideas, I have tried to make these files as universal as
  79.     possible.  Over time, you will likely incorporate your own
  80.     language into the text and make modifications to the
  81.     worksheets.

  92.         If you want to get started quickly, just read these few
  93.     lines:

  95.         FIRST, take a look at what is here.
  96.     
  97.         Open the spreadsheets in your spreadsheet program.  The
  98.     best file to look at first is BPMPROF.XLS (Proforma
  99.     Financial Statements).  I highly recommend that you do
  100.     your spreadsheet work first.  Make sure your business
  101.     idea is going to be financially worthwhile before trying
  102.     to write the text portion.
  103.     
  104.         Get into your word processing program.
  105.     
  106.         Open the BUSINESS PLAN MASTER file, either BPMWIN10.DOC
  107.     (Winword 2.0), or BIZPLN21.TXT (ASCII text).  This is
  108.     the main BUSINESS PLAN MASTER file which will contain
  109.     the text you will use.
  110.     
  111.        To access the BPMWIN10.DOC file from Winword, use
  112.     "File Open" and then look for it in the directory you
  113.     placed it in.
  114.     
  115.         If you are now hopelessly lost, take a look at the
  116.     User's Guide.  By registering at the *PROFESSIONAL* level, I
  117.     send you a printed User's Guide along with other valuable
  118.     items.

  126.          The text files are in two formats, ASCII text and
  127.     Word/Windows v2.0 The spreadsheet files are in
  128.     Excel/Windows 4.0 (*.XLS) format.  These files can be
  129.     opened with higher versions.  Most other Windows
  130.     spreadsheet programs can import these Excel files.

  202.         Shareware describes a method of distributing copyrighted
  203.     software in which a user is allowed to fully evaluate the
  204.     software before purchasing it.  After an evaluation period,
  205.     the user is required to register the product if he decides
  206.     to keep using it.

  208.         Shareware distribution addresses all of the legitimate
  209.     complaints that users have with commercial software
  210.     distribution.

  212.       o Shareware allows a user to fully evaluate a product,
  213.         free of charge, in his or her home or business, *before*
  214.         deciding to buy it.

  216.       o Shareware programs can circulate freely on Bulletin
  217.         Boards, through Shareware disk distributors, or through

  220.       o Because Shareware distribution reduces the need to
  221.         advertise, Shareware is less expensive than commercial

  233.     show their appreciation to developers for this extremely
  234.     flexible distribution scheme by registering their software.

  236.     gradually disappear.  It is not sufficient to simply let the
  237.     "other guy" pay the registration.  You are the other guy's
  238.     "other guy".

  244.         Shareware is not "free" software.  Shareware is not
  245.     Public Domain software.  The fee that you may have paid to
  246.     receive a Shareware program does not mean that the software
  247.     has been paid for.  This money was paid to a Shareware disk
  248.     vendor, User Group, Bulletin Board Service or retailer to
  249.     cover their cost of getting the program to you.  Shareware
  250.     software is paid for by registering your copy with the

  261.     four years.  During that period it has been in constant use
  262.     by its author.  BUSINESS PLAN MASTER was originally
  263.     developed for the IBM PC.  It was later developed to run on
  264.     Apple Macintosh computers.  The development now is done
  265.     concurrently - wherever I feel like working on a particular
  266.     day!

  302.     PLAN MASTER has changed considerably since its conception,
  303.     and it has been further enhanced since its Shareware
  304.     release.  I originally wrote BUSINESS PLAN MASTER for an
  305.     import venture with Germany and that well-known German
  306.     perfectionism has rubbed off on me!  I have already spent
  307.     thousands of hours developing this program.
